Kawhi Leonard Trade to Raptors Delayed Pending NBA Investigation into Clippers

The blockbuster trade sending Kawhi Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors remains on hold as the NBA continues its investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers, creating uncertainty around one of the offseason’s biggest moves.

According to ESPN, the deal agreed to in principle on June 30 cannot be finalized until the league concludes its investigation. The delay stems from the NBA requiring Toronto’s ownership group to assume any potential financial penalties tied to Leonard’s contract that could result from the investigation.

In a statement released to ESPN, the Clippers said they have spent the past 10 months fully cooperating with the league.

“For the past 10 months, our organization has fully cooperated with an NBA investigation, participating in dozens of interviews, providing tens of thousands of documents, and facilitating access to our staff,” the team said. “While the process has been challenging, we have remained committed to transparency.”

The franchise also revealed it was informed that the Raptors must accept any potential liability before the trade can be completed.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we expect the trade to be finalized following its conclusion.”

Clippers Deny Wrongdoing

The investigation reportedly centers on Joe Sanberg and Aspiration, with allegations involving financial arrangements connected to Leonard’s contract.

The Clippers strongly denied any improper conduct.

“We did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration. Like many sophisticated investors, financial institutions, and business partners, we were victims of a fraud initiated by Sanberg, who has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.”

The organization maintained that it has consistently cooperated with the NBA and remains confident it will ultimately be cleared.

“We remain confident that, when the facts are evaluated fairly and thoroughly, the NBA will confirm exactly what we have said from the beginning: We have not done what we are accused of doing.”

Trade Remains in Limbo

Until the NBA completes its investigation, Leonard’s return to Toronto—and any additional pieces involved in the trade—will remain in limbo.

The delay also impacts roster planning for both franchises as they prepare for the 2026-27 season, with players and fans awaiting clarity on when the transaction can officially become league-approved.

Further updates are expected once the NBA concludes its investigation.
