Savannah James is shedding light on an uncomfortable luxury shopping experience she says took place during a recent trip to Milan, Italy.
On the latest episode of her podcast Everybody’s Crazy, James recalled arriving at a Hermès boutique for what she said was a scheduled shopping appointment with longtime friend April McDaniel. According to James, the pair was met at the entrance by a sales associate who allegedly refused to allow them inside despite their reservation.
James said the interaction left her confused, especially because they had planned the visit in advance.
McDaniel, who was with James during the incident, explained that she questioned the employee about the decision and ultimately escalated the matter to store management. She later claimed the associate involved was dismissed from the store following the complaint.
After management became aware of the situation, James and McDaniel said Hermès apologized and invited them back into the boutique, where they were escorted to a private shopping room and received VIP treatment.
James also revealed that the Hermès incident was not the only uncomfortable retail experience she encountered during the trip. She shared that she had a similarly disappointing interaction while visiting a Chanel boutique, adding to what she described as a frustrating experience shopping at luxury fashion houses.
The story has sparked widespread discussion online, with many consumers sharing their own experiences at high-end retailers. Some argued that luxury brands often create intimidating shopping environments, while others cautioned against drawing broad conclusions from a single incident.
Neither Hermès nor Chanel had publicly commented on James’ account at the time of publication.
As the conversation continues across social media, the incident has renewed debate about customer service standards, accessibility, and whether luxury retailers are doing enough to ensure every shopper receives respectful treatment.
What are your thoughts? Should luxury brands rethink how they approach customer service, or was this simply an isolated incident? Let us know in the comments.
