Craig shared the news in a prerecorded video that was played while he sat on stage wearing his Hall of Fame gold jacket. The legendary San Francisco 49ers running back said he believes the disease could be connected to the concussions he sustained throughout his NFL career.
One of the most accomplished running backs of his era, Craig was a cornerstone of the 49ers’ dynasty and became the first NFL player to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
Craig’s announcement cast a somber tone over what was otherwise a celebration of his remarkable football career, while also drawing renewed attention to the long-term neurological risks associated with repeated head trauma in football.
