PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Prairie View A&M scored 28 points in the third quarter and defeated Texas Southern 52-14 on Sunday at Panther Stadium in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Panthers improved to 1-0 in SWAC play after losing 49-30 to No. 5 Tarleton State in their season opener. Texas Southern fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Prairie View led 17-7 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter.
Prairie View Pulls Away After Halftime
Prairie View took an early lead when Jahbari Kuykendall returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
Quarterback Tevin Carter then connected with Damien McDaniel for a 24-yard touchdown, and Ethan Eddins added a 37-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 17-0 lead after one quarter.
Texas Southern responded in the second quarter when Cam’Ron McCoy scored on a 17-yard touchdown run.
The Tigers had opportunities to cut further into the deficit, but DeMarcus Wynn forced a fumble while sacking McCoy, and Fitzroy Ledgister blocked a 50-yard field-goal attempt. Prairie View took a 17-7 lead into halftime.
Carter extended the lead with a 24-yard touchdown run at the 9:01 mark of the third quarter. Less than three minutes later, he found Trayvon Jones for a 39-yard touchdown.
Carter added another scoring pass, a 46-yard connection with Chase Bingmon, with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter. Bingmon later scored on a 2-yard run, completing Prairie View’s 28-point quarter.
Carter and Jones connected for a 2-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Texas Southern scored its final touchdown with five seconds remaining on R. Hammond’s 8-yard run.

Carter Accounts for Five Touchdowns
Carter completed 16 of 22 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown.
He accounted for four of Prairie View’s five second-half touchdowns, including two scoring passes to Jones and the 46-yard touchdown to Bingmon.
Carter also produced a strong performance in the season opener against Tarleton State, throwing for 314 yards and rushing for 130 yards.
Bingmon Contributes on the Ground and Through the Air
Chase Bingmon rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and caught one pass for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Prairie View finished with 397 total yards, using several big plays to build its second-half lead.
Prairie View Defense Limits Texas Southern
Prairie View’s defense held Texas Southern to 318 total yards and forced two turnovers. The Tigers did not score again after McCoy’s second-quarter touchdown until Hammond’s late fourth-quarter run.
Defensive back Malachi Williams recorded three sacks, while safety K. Canterbury led all players with 11 tackles, including five solo stops.
McCoy completed 10 of 19 passes for 81 yards and rushed for 17 yards and a touchdown. Texas Southern struggled to sustain drives against a Prairie View defense that had allowed 49 points in its opener.

Prairie View Opens SWAC Play With a Win
The victory gave Prairie View a strong start to its SWAC title defense under head coach Tremaine Jackson. The Panthers responded to their season-opening loss with a balanced performance that included five touchdowns from Carter, 397 total yards and a significant defensive improvement.
Texas Southern heads to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP on September 12, while Prairie View will take on Baylor next week.
