The Minnesota Timberwolves have been dealt a significant setback early in the 2026-27 NBA season, as superstar guard Anthony Edwards is expected to miss an extended stretch while addressing an ongoing knee issue.
ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported Tuesday, October 27, that Edwards will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his ailing right knee and could miss up to two months. The news comes after Edwards was listed as questionable for Monday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers because of right knee injury management. He played in the game despite the concern.
Anthony Edwards Was Off to a Strong Start
Before the injury news, Edwards was putting together an impressive opening stretch. Through Minnesota’s first four games, he averaged 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, shooting 48.1% from the field and 40% from three-point range.
He delivered 47 points against Cleveland on Monday, although the Timberwolves fell 127-125 in overtime.
Minnesota entered the season with a 3-1 record, making Edwards’ potential two-month absence particularly difficult for a team looking to establish itself among the Western Conference contenders. Reuters
Who Steps Up for Minnesota?
Without Edwards, Minnesota will need additional scoring, playmaking and leadership from the rest of its roster. The coaching staff will also have to adjust its offensive approach without one of the league’s most explosive perimeter scorers.
The Timberwolves’ ability to remain competitive during his recovery could have a significant impact on their playoff positioning later in the season.
For now, the reported timeline is up to two months, and Edwards’ recovery will determine when he can return to the court. An exact return date has not been established in the cited reports.
What This Means for the Timberwolves
Edwards’ absence is a major test for Minnesota this early in the campaign. The team must find ways to generate offense and close out games without its leading star while avoiding the temptation to rush his return.
The priority will be getting Edwards healthy for the most important stretch of the season.
