JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Lady Rams final push fell a possession short on Monday evening. In a game of runs, Albany State made a final push in the final five minutes, but came up short of retaking the lead as Edward Waters hung on for the 65-62 women’s basketball victory.

Trailing 60-50 with 6:34 left to go, ASU was determined to get back to a tighter game as Milana Holmes downed a jumper to start and made a free throw to finish a 7-0 spurt to make it a 3-point game, 60-57, with 3:11 showing. The Lady Rams were not done as Yasmine Fairchild laid the ball in for a 64-62 tally at 1:14. Edward Waters, though, made the lone point of the final minute to hold on for the win.

ASU saw Elisa Saffold pump in four 3-pointers as part of her 16-point night to lead the way. Holmes equaled her teammate with 16 points on 8 of 12 free throws and grabbed eight rebounds. Chelsea Hill chipped in 10 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. Johanna Bell added eight points, six boards and four helpers, while Fairchild finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.

The Lady Tigers received 19 points from Khadia Smith.

The Lady Rams put in the game’s opening five points capped by a Fairchild bucket and she added another for the team to lead, 7-3, midway through the opening quarter. Saffold drained a trey for a 12-7 advantage near the end of the first frame.

ASU held the same five-point difference, 16-11, only 1:38 into the second frame. Edward Waters ran off the next 15 points to burst on top, 26-16. The visitors had their answer with the following 15 points of their own with Bell accounting for six of those to reverse it back to a 31-26 ASU edge.

Saffold downed a 3-pointer to end the first half and had another to open the second 20 minutes for a 37-29 ASU advantage. The Lady Tigers netted the next nine points, but the Lady Rams retook the lead back to a 41-38 score with 6:07 in the third. Edward Waters took its turn back on the see saw of momentum for the next seven points, 45-41, and did not give it up for the final 13:40.
