Albany State’s quarterback Kelias Williams had a career day. He completed 16 of 18 passes for a career high 254 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Rams defeated Morehouse 41-19, giving the Marron Tigers their first loss of the season.
Albany State took a 3-0 lead on Gabriel Ballinas’ 47-yard field goal with 2:47 left in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, the Golden Rams would increase the lead to 10 on Kelias Williamns’ 20-yard touchdown run (he had 10 carries for 49 yards on the day) and the the converted extra point. The Maroon Tigers would cut the lead to three at 10-7 when quarterback Michael Sims found Amyr Smith on a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Albany State would push the lead back to 10 points with just 33 seconds to go in the first half when Williams threw a 38-yard touchdown pass toMike Green. Ballinas’ extra point made the score 17-7.
Early in the third quarter, Albany State extended their lead to 24-7 when Williams threw his second scoring pass of the day ,29 yards to Chris Hunt, which completed a 5 play, 73 yard drive. A little more than three minutes later McKinley Habersham would take it in from 11-yards out to push the Golden Ram lead to 31-7.
Morehouse responded with 5 play, 63 yard drive that ended with a 11-yard pass from Sims to Smith, their second touchdown connection the day, that would pull the Maroon Tigers to within 18 at 31-13. The extra point was missed.
With just ten seconds to go in the quarter, the Kelias Williams threw his third touchdown pass of the day, an 8-yard pass to McKinley Habersham, pushing the lead to 38-13. Gabriel Ballinas’s second 40+yard field goal of the day, this one from 43 yards, to give Albany State a 41-13 lead. Morehouse’s Sims would throw a touchdown( the extra point was no good) with 1:17 remaining in the game to bring the score to its final tally of 41-19.
The Golden Rams racked up 472 yards of total offense to just 218 for Morehouse, which included just 34 on the ground.
Albany State (4-3, 3-0 SIAC) after losing their first three games, are now on a four-game winning streak. They return to action, Saturday, October 20, as they host Clark Atlanta Universirty for the Golden Rams’ homecoming. The kickoff time is 2:00 pm EST.
The Maroon Tigers of Morehouse ( 6-1 , 2-1 SIAC) will look to get back to their winning ways as they head to Columbia, South Carolina to take on Benedict College. The kickoff time is scheduled for 2:00 po.m. EST.
