Coppin State baseball completes sweep over Saint Peter’s

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State’s baseball completed a three-game series-opening sweep with a 16-8 victory over Saint Peter’s on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles are now 3-0 for the first time in their history while the Peacocks fall to 0-3.
 
CSU hit .393 for the series, outscoring Saint Peter’s, 42-19, with 42 base hits and ten stolen bases. Sixteen of Coppin’s 42 hits went for extra bases. Coppin’s pitching staff recorded a 4.33 earned run average with 27 strikeouts while holding the Peacocks to a .240 average.
 
Jordan Hamberg went 3-for-5 with two triples and a double while driving in four runs at the plate while allowing just one earned run in 5.0 innings of work with six strikeouts in the no-decision. He finished the series with a whopping 2.042 OPS, hitting .500 (6-for-12) with six runs two home runs, two triples, a double, nine RBI, four walks and three stolen bases. His slugging percentage came out to 1.417.
 
Brody BlackBrian NicolasSam Nieves and Josh Hankins all had two hits apiece with Black scoring a team-high four runs with two walks. Nieves also scored twice while Hankins drove in three runs. Brett Curranalso had two RBI to go with a double.
 
On the mound, Clay Thompson got the win after allowing two runs while getting through the sixth inning.  Tim RuffinoGiovanni Canales and Nico Felber also pitched an inning each with Felber striking out two in the ninth.  Ruffino gave up two hits in the seventh but did not allow a run.
 
Saint Peter’s took advantage of a Coppin error and hit a controversial three-run home run off Hamberg to take an early 3-0 lead. The Eagles tied right it back up with a three-spot in the second with Corey Miley scoring the first run on a wild pitch after reaching on a fielder’s choice and stealing second. With runner on second and third, Hankins did a deep fly ball to center field to drive in Mike Dorcean easily from third, and Nieves kept on going after rounding third to score the tying run.
 
Hamberg held Saint Peter’s scoreless in the third and CSU took its first lead of the game on an RBI double from Nicolas to score Black who led off with a single.
 
After SPU tied the score with a run in the fourth, Hamberg tossed a scoreless fifth and was the pitcher of record when Coppin took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Black drew a leadoff walk off reliever Christian Coombes, and he scored on Sarabia’s triple down the right field line. Sebastien Sarabia later scored on a passed ball.
 
The visitors tied the score with two runs off Thompson in the sixth, but Coppin was able to put crooked numbers on the scoreboard over the next two innings with four in the sixth and six runs in the seventh.
 
Dorcean and Nieves led off the sixth with back-to-back singles before another reliever was called upon. After a pair of punchouts, Black walked to load the bases, and Hamberg cleared them with a three-run triple down the right field line. Hamberg scored on a wild pitch to make a 10-6 score after six.
 
Ruffino took the mound to start the seventh and escaped a jam as Sarabia made a great play at first to turn two. After another single, Ruffino forced an unassisted groundout to Sarabia.
 
Coppin plated six runs on four hits in the seventh with an RBI single from Hankins, followed by a two-run double from Curran.  Black and Hamberg both just missed on home runs, hitting the left field and right field walls on the fly to drive in two more runs. Hamberg later scored on a wild pitch to make it a ten-run lead.
 
Saint Peter’s scored a run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Felber struck out the final two batters to complete the sweep.
 
Coppin returns to action on Tuesday, February 21 when it hosts Mount St. Mary’s in a 3:00 pm first pitch.
