The final edition of Dr. Cavil’s 2025-26 HBCU Major Division Softball Poll is here, and after a season filled with dominant conference runs, statement victories, and postseason pushes, the nation’s top programs have officially been ranked.
Here is how the final rankings shook out.
No. 5 — Texas Southern Tigers (30-12 ,17-6)

The Tigers end the season at No.5 in the poll rankings. Texas Southern’s season came to an end in the elimination round of the SWAC Softball Tournament with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Southern. The Tigers ended to 2026 with a 30-12 overall record and 17-6 mark within SWAC play. This represent a 16-win overall improvement and +11 conference mark from last season.
No. 4 — Prairie View A&M Panthers , (27-19, 19-4)

Prairie View A&M remains at No.4 in the final rankings. The Lady Panthers’ season was brought to a close via an 8-2 by Jackson State in the SWAC Softball Tournament quarterfinals. Nonetheless, PV claimed their fourth consecutive SWAC West crown . Morgan Smith led the Panthers with a .416 batting average and Kayla Zaid had 50 hits on the season.
No. 3 — Southern Jaguars (37-15 ,18-6)

Southern holds on to No.3 in the weekly poll rankings. Southern’s win margin increased by 15 from the previous campaign. The Lady Jaguars, who finished second in the SWAC’s Western Division, lost in the conference’s softball tournament 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion, via a game winning single off the bat of FAMU’s Braxtyn Battle.
No. 2 — Howard Bison (29-19 ,18-3)

Howard checks in at No.2 in the final weekly rankings. The Lady Bison defeated South Carolina State 11-2 to claim their second consecutive MEAC Tournament crown. Howard, who was the top hitting ( a team average of .313) and the no.1 pitching team ( a team ERA of 3.40) went to the Durham Regional where they would face No. 12 Duke.
Unfortunately Howard fell to the Blue Devils 10-1. This was the second straight year Howard tasted defeat served up by Duke; the Blue Devils blanked the Bison 12-0 in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Howard came up short , 4-2, in the elimination game against Baylor.
No. 1 — Florida A&M Rattlers (32-22, 19-5)

Claiming the top spot in the final Dr. Cavil’s Inside the HBCU Sports Lab Major Division softball rankings is Florida A&M.
FAMU earned a spot in the NCAA Softball Tournament for the 14th time, where they opened up play against Florida in the Gainnesville Regional. The Gators spanked the Rattlers 12-0 forcing FAMU into the elimination game where they would face Texas State.
Although FAMU was ultimately defeated 6-0 in the elimination game, the 2026 campaign was a historic one for the Rattlers. Florida A&M won the SWAC Tournament for the first time in exciting fashion, as Braxtyn Battle’s base knock drove in the game winning run, pushing FAMU past Souther 2-1. The program also topped the 30 win barrier for the first time since going 40-25 in 2006.
