Edward Waters goes down in exhibition matchup against North Carolina A&T

East Greensboro, North Carolina-The Howard White, Jr. era of Edward Waters men’s basketball opened up on Monday evening in an exhibition against NCAA Division I and Colonial Athletic Association member, North Carolina A&T. The Purple & Orange suffered a tough loss to the Aggies, 100-66 at the Elias Corbett Sports Center.

Edward Waters quickly fell behind the proverbial eight ball to start the contest, with North Carolina A&T opening. the game on a 23-4 run over the first nine minutes of the first half. The first half saw the Tigers fall behind by as many as 29 points. EWU was able to slightly close the gap down the stretch of the first half to trail 46-20 at halftime.

The Aggies picked up where they left off in the second half, pushing their advantage to a game high 42 points. NCAT was able to comfortably get to the century mark and cruise their way to a season opening victory on their home floor.

Taking a look inside the numbers, the Tigers were outshot by a wide margin, 50.7% to 39.3%, including a 50.0% to 30.8% advantage in three-point shooting. The Aggies also outrebounded Edward Waters 40-35, including a 15-13 edge on the offensive boards. 20 turnovers from the Tigers hurt their efforts as NCAT converted those missteps into 35 points. The A&T reserves also outscored the Edward Waters bench by a wide margin, 40-22.

Despite the tough loss, the Tigers were able to put three players in double figures. Jackson State graduate transfer Larry Kuimi had a solid debut for EWU, falling just one rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Andre Myers finished with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and went 2-of-5 from three-point range. Senior guard Felix Hayes finished the night with 11 points and three boards in the contest for the Tigers.

Edward Waters will have their official season and SIAC opener on the road on Tuesday, November 15th against the Dragons of Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. Tip-off from JF Lane Gymnasium is set for 7:00pm.
