Fayetteville State Football Alum Joshua Williams will play in Super Bowl LVII

Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State University will have a presence on the field at the 2023 National Football League’s Super Bowl LVII Championship game with the Broncos’ former cornerback Joshua Williams.
 

Williams saw significant playing time in the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game Sunday night as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Kansas City, Mo. Joshua Williams, who was drafted by the Chiefs with their 135th pick, finished the game with five tackles (four solo and one assisted tackle), a pass deflection, and an interception with 7:02 left in the fourth quarter. Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow threw the pass deep right, intended for Tee Higgins, but teammate Bryan Cook made a pass deflection which aided Williams’ interception on the Kansas City 18-yard line. The INT stopped Cincinnati’s five-play drive that started on the Bengals’ 18-yard line.

Joshua Williams (6-3 and 193lbs) has played in all 17 of Kansas City’s regular season games and is responsible for 40 total tackles, 11 assisted tackles, and one interception. His first NFL interception was against San Francisco on October 23 for a return of seven yards. He had a total of seven pass deflections during the regular season.

Williams grew up in Fayetteville, NC, and attended Jack Britt High School, where he played football and ran track. After graduating from high school, he completed a postgraduate year at Palmetto Prep in Columbia, South Carolina, before joining the Fayetteville State Football program. Joshua played three seasons due to Covid-19’s cancelation of the 2020 season. Williams played in a total of 29 games and finished with 81 total tackles (55 solo, 26 assisted). He had 21 pass breakups five interceptions with returns of 32 yards and a touchdown.

Super Bowl LVII is the upcoming American football championship game of the National Football League (NFL) for the 2022 NFL season. It will be played between the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Philadelphia Eagles and the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Kansas City Chiefs. The game is scheduled to be played on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona with kickoff time at 6:30 p.m. EST (4:30 p.m. MST).

The Kansas City Chiefs finished the regular season with a 14-3 record and are 2-0 in post-season play. Super Bowl LVII will be their third Super Bowl appearance in four consecutive seasons and their third under head coach Andy Reid.

The Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles who defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-7.
