Florida A&M defeats Jacksonville 59-54 for first win of the season

Ahriahna Grizzle and Nashani Gilbert combined to score 36 points in the Florida A&M Rattlers’ 59-54 win against the Jacksonville Dolphins at home Saturday.

Grizzle led the Rattlers (1-4) with 21 points and four steals. Gilbert added 15 points, five assists, and four steals and Peryonna Sylvester chipped in as well with 11 points off the bench.

Florida A&M forced 33 Jacksonville turnovers while committing 28 themselves in Saturday’s game. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 32 points on the offensive end of the floor. Ivet Subirats’ five steals led the way for Florida A&M.

How It Happened

Florida A&M started off strong, putting together a 13-12 lead heading into the second quarter. Florida A&M capitalized on nine Jacksonville turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.

Jacksonville fought back to tie the game at 13-13 before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run starting at the 8:15 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Subirats, to take an 18-13 lead. The Rattlers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 29-24 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M forced 10 Jacksonville turnovers in the period and turned them into 12 points.

Following intermission, Florida A&M continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 38-28 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Gilbert, to expand its lead further to 43-28 with 3:33 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Dolphins had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Rattlers still entered the fourth quarter with a 47-36 edge. Florida A&M took advantage of 10 Jacksonville turnovers in the quarter, scoring 14 points off of takeaways.

The Rattlers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Florida A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 12 total points.
