PINE BLUFF, Ark. — The Florida A&M men’s basketball team got a 30-point performance from the bench, but fell 99-97 to the UAPB Golden Lions on the road Saturday.

The Rattlers (2-13, 0-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Jalen Speer, who had 29 points, nine assists and two steals. Keith Lamar tacked on 17 points and eight rebounds and Shannon Grant chipped in as well with 13 points.

Florida A&M did an excellent job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 24 assists while turning the ball over nine times. Speer’s nine assists were the most for the Rattlers. Roderick Coffee III also contributed with four assists of his own.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-8, Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run with 15:08 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Ja’Derryus Eatmon, to take a 17-9 lead. The Rattlers then lost some of that lead but still entered halftime with a 46-42 advantage. Florida A&M did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 32 of its 46 points close to the basket.

UAPB proceeded to take a 77-70 lead before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 77-75 with 6:20 to go in the contest. The Rattlers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 99-97. Florida A&M made the most of seven offensive rebounds to tack on nine second-chance points out of 51 total in the period.
