The Florida A&M women’s basketball team went into the fourth quarter tied 48-48 with Sam Houston, but could not take control and fell 65-62 to the Bearkats on the road Friday.

The Rattlers (1-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Ahriahna Grizzle, who had 22 points. Sydney Hendrix tacked on a double-double from the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Peryonna Sylvester helped out with 10 points.

Florida A&M grabbed 37 rebounds in Friday’s game compared to Sam Houston’s 36, led by Hendrix’s 11 boards.

The Florida A&M defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday’s game, forcing 23 Sam Houston turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Olivia Delancy led the way individually for the Rattlers with one steal.

How It Happened

Florida A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Florida A&M then cut the Bearkats lead to 32-31 before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Grizzle, to take a 37-32 lead. The Bearkats then battled back to even it up at 37-37 heading into halftime. Florida A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 21 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Sam Houston snatched a 46-41 lead before Florida A&M answered back by going on a 7-0 run to grab a 48-46 lead with 1:31 to go in the third. The Bearkats then rallied to tie it at 48-48 heading into the fourth quarter. Florida A&M scored four fast break points in the quarter.

Sam Houston broke the tie, edging ahead in the game’s final quarter and leaving Florida A&M behind 65-62 at the final buzzer. Florida A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
