Grambling State’s Lady Tigers delivered a stunning performance, securing a thrilling 70-67 victory against Arizona State University in an exhilarating showdown as part of the PAC12/SWAC Legacy Series.

This significant win marks a momentous occasion for the Lady Tigers, clinching their first Power Five victory since 2018. Additionally, it stands as their second home win against a Power Five school in the history of the program, reflecting the team’s resilience and dedication.

The game kicked off with an intense first quarter, seeing both Grambling and Arizona State matching each other point for point, concluding the quarter with an 18-18 tie, setting the stage for an exhilarating contest.

In a commanding second quarter, the Lady Tigers surged ahead, leading by 13 points with a score of 27-14. Displaying impressive accuracy from beyond the arc, all 27 points in the quarter were garnered from three-pointers, boasting a remarkable 9-12 record in 3-point shots and 9-19 in field goals. Heading into halftime, Grambling maintained a strong 45-32 lead, further fortified by a shot clock violation that nullified two points for ASU.

Despite ASU’s spirited comeback attempt in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Tigers 17-15, Grambling retained a comfortable lead of 60-49, asserting a commanding 14-point advantage.

Grambling’s dominant presence in the paint and disciplined defensive play laid a solid foundation in the game’s earlier phases. However, in the latter part of the match, turnovers and rebounding disparities challenged the Tigers’ lead, resulting in a fiercely contested final five minutes, including three lead changes. Ultimately, Grambling emerged victorious with a final score of 70-67.

DeMya Young showcased an exceptional performance, leading the team in both 3-pointers and overall points, amassing 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. Her teammate, Jazmyne Jackson, complemented her efforts by going 5-5 in 3-pointers, concluding the game with 15 points. Defensively, Douthshine Prien displayed remarkable tenacity, securing 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals, including early charges in the game.

The Lady Tigers celebrate this significant win after overcoming a two-game losing streak and are eager to capitalize on this momentum as they face the University of Houston on Sunday at 2 pm.
