Gregg Popovich has a new ring — and this one has nothing to do with basketball.
The legendary former San Antonio Spurs head coach has remarried, tying the knot with Mary Barth Budenholzer, the former wife of his longtime Spurs assistant coach, Mike Budenholzer.
According to TMZ, a marriage license obtained in Bexar County, Texas, shows that Popovich and Mary were married on September 16.
The relationship connects two of the most influential figures from Popovich’s legendary Spurs coaching tree in an unexpected way.
Mike Budenholzer worked under Popovich in San Antonio from 1996 through 2013, helping the Spurs win four NBA championships before eventually leaving to become the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He later coached the Milwaukee Bucks to an NBA championship in 2021.
The Spurs themselves described Budenholzer as Popovich’s top assistant for several years, and Popovich once called him more of a “co-head coach” than an assistant.
For Popovich, the marriage comes years after the death of his first wife, Erin. The couple had been married for four decades before Erin died in April 2018 at age 67 following an extended illness.
Popovich, 77, stepped down as the Spurs’ head coach in 2025 after nearly three decades leading San Antonio.
Now, the five-time NBA champion has added another ring to his collection — this time alongside a new chapter in his personal life.
According to TMZ, Popovich and Mary exchanged wedding rings Sept. 16 in Texas.
