Tennessee State University has named longtime athletics administrator Jennifer Bell as its interim director of athletics, stepping into the role following the recent administrative leave of Dr. Mikki Allen. Bell had most recently served as Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services and Senior Woman Administrator.
Bell brings more than three decades of experience within the TSU athletic department, having joined the university in 1991 as an assistant women’s basketball coach. After 11 seasons on the sidelines, she transitioned into athletic administration, where she built an extensive résumé in NCAA compliance, student-athlete services, and academic support. She has served as the department’s Senior Woman Administrator since 2023.
Her appointment comes during a pivotal period for Tennessee State Athletics, as the university works through leadership changes while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 athletic year. Bell will oversee the department’s day-to-day operations as TSU continues its search for long-term stability in one of the Ohio Valley Conference’s flagship athletic programs.
A respected figure throughout the department, Bell has played a significant role in ensuring student-athlete success both academically and administratively. Her familiarity with TSU’s programs and institutional operations provides continuity during the leadership transition.
Tennessee State is expected to provide additional information regarding the athletic department’s long-term leadership plans in the coming weeks.
