After six seasons away from the NBA, Mario Hezonja is getting another opportunity.
The former No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft has agreed to a one-year, $2.8 million deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Michael Tellem of Excel Sports Management confirmed the agreement.
Hezonja, 31, has re-established himself as one of Europe’s top players since leaving the NBA following the 2019-20 season. Most recently starring for Real Madrid, the 6-foot-8 forward has been a standout in the EuroLeague, showcasing the versatile scoring ability and playmaking potential that once made him a coveted NBA prospect.
The Eastern Conference finalist Cavaliers are expected to use Hezonja in a key wing role as they bolster their depth for another championship push. Cleveland reportedly beat out strong interest from both the Golden State Warriors and several other NBA teams to secure the veteran forward’s return.
During his first NBA stint, Hezonja appeared in 330 games with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers, averaging 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.
Now, after reviving his career overseas, Hezonja will have another chance to prove himself on the NBA stage with a Cavaliers team looking to contend in the Eastern Conference.
