MEAC announces Volleyballers of the Week

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 24, 2022Howard University sophomore Cimone Woodardwas selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. North Carolina Central’s Tori Wilson was named Rookie of the Week and Howard University senior Kayla Diaz named Setter of the Week, while Coppin State senior Ashley Roman earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Woodard hit a combined .375 and averaged 2.6 kills per set in a pair of conference wins this past weekend, helping the Bison extend their winning streak to eight matches. In a four-set win over Maryland Eastern Shore, she had 12 kills (hitting .333), five blocks and four service aces – and in a five-set win over Delaware State, she hit .438 with 11 kills and two blocks.



Tori Wilson (6-0, Fr., MB/RS, Allen, Texas)

Wilson averaged 3.3 kills per set and hit a combined .351 in two matches this past weekend. She opened on Friday with a 13-kill performance against Morgan State, a match in which she hit .500 with just two errors in 13 swings, and on Sunday, she had 13 kills, five digs and four blocks in a five-set match against Coppin State.



Kayla Diaz (5-7, Sr., S, Nanuet, N.Y.)

Diaz averaged 9.4 assists per set for the Bison in wins over Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore this past weekend. She fell one dig shy of a double-double against the Hornets, racking up 48 assists, nine digs and five service aces. Against the Hawks, she had 37 assists, seven digs and a pair of blocks.

Rowan averaged 5.1 digs per set as Coppin State extended its winning streak to four matches. She opened with 15 digs in a sweep of South Carolina State, before turning in a 26-dig effort in a five-set win over North Carolina Central – her 10th 20-dig match of the season.


Other Top Performers
Andrea Tsvetanova (Coppin State) racked up a season-high 55 assists and 18 digs in a five-set win over North Carolina Central.

Ammaarah Williams (Coppin State) recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs against North Carolina Central.

Jasmal Cruz (Delaware State) had 22 digs against Norfolk State and 19 against Howard.

Alondra Maldonado (Delaware State) had 13 kills against Howard and 12, on .556 hitting, against Norfolk State.

Valeria Matias (Maryland Eastern Shore) recorded 18 digs against Norfolk State and 16 against Howard.

Sydney Morris (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 12 kills against Norfolk State and 10 against Howard.

Trinity Carruthers (Morgan State) had 34 assists in a four-set win over South Carolina State.

Madison Grace (Morgan State) racked up 14 kills and 10 digs in a win over South Carolina State.

Jadyn Perkins (Morgan State) had nine kills and three blocks against South Carolina State.

Carla Hernandez (Norfolk State) had 15 kills against Delaware State, after turning in an 8-kill, 6-dig, 4-ace effort against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Sydney McCree (Norfolk State) had 29 assists, nine digs and three aces against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Nicole Rodriguez (Norfolk State) had 19 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore and 12 against Delaware State.

Vanila Pulu-Suliafu (North Carolina Central) recorded double-doubles against Morgan State (30 assists, 10 digs) and Coppin State (37 assists, 13 digs).
