Miles scored 13 points in the fourth quarter Thursday night but it was not enough to escape some early-game miscues in a 22-16 loss to Edward Waters at Sloan-Alumni Stadium. The Golden Bears (1-8) have now lost five straight games and finish the 2022 home campaign without a victory.
Down 19 points entering the fourth quarter, Miles staged a comeback. Following a great 22-yard catch by Jaylin Peterson that got the Golden Bears within striking range, quarterback Jacob Keller punched it in from a yard out for the first touchdown of the game for Miles. The 2-point conversion was intercepted so the deficit stood at 22-9.
The Golden Bears got back in the end zone on their next drive, with Keller finding Tahj Lee for a 6-yard scoring pass on 4th-and-goal with 1:31 left. Miles’ onside kick was recovered by the Tigers (3-6), who then ran out the clock to secure the victory.
There were several opportunities for Miles to have earned a different outcome. After getting a 53-yard run from Aaron Frazier on the first play from scrimmage, Miles had to settle for a 20-yard field goal by Jackson Spradlin for an early 3-0 advantage. On their ensuing drive, Miles drove deep into EWU territory before Keller was picked off on a twice-tipped pass at the 3-yard line. The Tigers would then March 97 yards for a score to take the lead for good. Spradlin had another opportunity to put points on the board in the third quarter, but a bad snap disrupted his attempt, which was then blocked.
Keller threw for 146 yards, Peterson had seven catches for 101 yards and Frazier rushed for 85 yards to lead the Miles offense. Defensively, Jeremiah Sumrall had a game-high nine tackles while Austin Brundidge had seven tackles and a sack. The Golden Bears close out their season next Saturday when they travel to take on Tuskegee. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
