Morehouse gets by Edward Waters 26-20

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Coming in on a short week and a loss to Alabama A&M, the defense propeled Morehouse to their first victory on the season in a tight contest against Mid-South Conference member Edward Waters, 26-20, in humid Jacksonville, Florida.

The Maroon Tigers start the season (1-1, 0-0 SIAC) while the Tigers drop their first game on the 2019 season (0-1, 0-0).

The first points in the second half for the Maroon Tigers came off a recovered fumble by Tigers punter Angel Sevier. Linebacker Jonathan Mathis (Stone Mountain, Ga.) recovered the ball and ran into the endzone to put Morehouse up 16-6. On the next drive, Edward Water’s quarterback Roshard Branch was intercepted by Morehouse cornerback Macaiah Paige (Upper Marlboro, Md.). Running back Santo Dunn (Miami, Fla.). ran it in for a 11-yard touchdown to give the Maroon Tigers a 23-6 lead.

To close out the third quarter, Tiger’s running back Maliek Stephens ran for a 13-yard touchdown. This touchdown was set up by Branch’s 51-yard bomb to wide receiver David Beeks. In two plays, the Tiger’s cut the deficit to 23-13.

In the fourth quarter, MHC’s kicker Fernando S Delamora (Fairburn, Ga). kicked a field goal to increase the lead to 26-13.

Morehouse wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a Michael Sims 52-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tremell Gooden (Fairburn, Ga). to take an early 6-0 lead.  Running back Frank Bailey was stopped on a two-point conversion attempt. After two three-in-outs by the Edward Waters’ offense, Maroon Tigers’ quarterback Jalen Brown (Stamford, Ct.). threw an interception to defensive back Drevontae Jackson. The Tigers failed to capitalize on the turnover as Branch overthrew receiver Christopher Ham on a 4th and 10.

Edward Waters running back Jayshawn Fields fumbled the ball to end the first quarter. Morehouse defensive lineman William Callaway recovered the ball. This turnover led to a field goal to increase the Maroon Tiger’s lead to 9-0.  Running back De’Shaun Hugee scored the Tigers first touchdown mid second quarter on a 5-yard run. This trimmed the Maroon Tigers’ lead to 9-6.

EWC’s running back Tristian Gunter rushed for a 2-yard touchdown with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter to trim the Maroon Tiger’s lead to 26-20. The late Edward Water’s rally wasn’t enough as Dunn ran the clock out to secure Morehouse’s victory.

For the second straight week, the Morehouse offense was led by Dunn who completed the night with 222 all-purpose yards and one touchdown. Sims threw for 136 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, defensive lineman Demetrice Lofton (Fairburn, Ga). led the Maroon Tiger’s with game-high nine tackles and three and a half sacks. Linebacker Julien Turner (Pickerington, Ohio). had eight tackles while Callaway finished with seven tackles and one sack.

Defensively, Morehouse forced Edward Waters into three turnovers. Offensively, the Maroon Tigers out rushed the Tigers 135-32.

The Maroon Tigers will have a full week to regroup and travel to Fairfield, Alabama on Saturday, September 14th to take on the Golden Bears of Miles College in the Prince Hall Americanism Football Classic. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. ET.
