The NBA has handed down sweeping penalties against the Los Angeles Clippers following its investigation into alleged salary-cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard, resulting in one of the most significant punishments in league history.
The Clippers have been ordered to forfeit five first-round draft picks, losing their selections in the 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032 and 2033 NBA Drafts.
The league also suspended Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank and president of business operations Gillian Zucker for their respective roles in the matter.
Kawhi Leonard Issues Statement
Leonard, through his new agent Harrison Gaines, released a statement addressing the investigation and the NBA’s ruling.
“Integrity and respect for this game are fundamental to who I am. I accept full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within my inner circle and regret the distraction this situation has caused the fans and my family.”
Leonard said he entered into his contract with the Clippers and the agreements under investigation in good faith and denied knowing about any effort to circumvent the NBA’s salary cap.
“I entered into my contract with the Clippers as well as the agreements in question in good faith, fully committed to fulfilling my obligations and with no knowledge of any intent on anyone’s part to circumvent the salary cap.”
Leonard, who is returning to Toronto, said his focus is now on moving forward.
“As I return to Toronto, I am focused on what I can control, closing this chapter, and moving forward with a clean slate.”
Steve Ballmer Suspended One Year
The NBA suspended Clippers owner Steve Ballmer for one year from all league and team activities.
According to the NBA, Ballmer knowingly sought to help Leonard obtain off-court income opportunities. The league also determined that Ballmer approved a business deal he knew was a precondition for Aspiration to enter into an endorsement agreement with Leonard.
The NBA additionally cited Ballmer’s failure to establish conditions that ensured the organization complied with the league’s salary-cap circumvention rules.
Gillian Zucker Suspended One Year
Clippers president of business operations Gillian Zucker was suspended without pay for one year.
The NBA determined that Zucker was primarily and directly responsible for the impermissible endorsement arrangements and also provided false and misleading statements to investigators.
Lawrence Frank Suspended Six Months
Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension without pay.
The NBA cited Frank’s involvement in the impermissible endorsement arrangements and his approval of impermissible expenses incurred by Leonard and his family.
Five Years of League Monitoring
The Clippers organization and its personnel will also be placed under a five-year compliance and monitoring program overseen by the NBA league office.
The combination of lost draft capital, executive suspensions and long-term league oversight represents a massive blow to the Clippers’ organization.
For Leonard, meanwhile, the next chapter begins in Toronto as he attempts to put the controversy behind him.
