The future of Anthony Davis with the Washington Wizards may already be uncertain.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Davis and his representatives are pursuing a maximum contract extension, a development that could make the veteran superstar a trade candidate if Washington is unwilling to meet his asking price. Fischer also noted that the Portland Trail Blazers are expected to have interest should Davis become available. Reports throughout the offseason have linked Portland to Davis as a fallback option if other superstar pursuits fail.
The Blazers reportedly explored acquiring Davis before he was dealt to Washington at the trade deadline and have continued to be mentioned as a potential landing spot.
For Washington, the decision comes down to timeline. While Davis remains one of the league’s premier two-way big men when healthy, he is entering the latter stages of his career. Davis, 33, appeared in just 20 games ( none of which were with the Washington Wizards following his trade there) , putting up per game numbers of 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists on 50.6% shooting from the field.
The Wizards must determine whether committing maximum money to a veteran star aligns with their long-term plans or whether flipping him for younger assets and draft capital makes more sense.
Meanwhile, Portland has made it clear that it is searching for a star capable of accelerating its climb up the Western Conference standings. Pairing Davis with the Blazers’ young core could immediately transform the team’s playoff outlook if the franchise believes the injury risk is worth the gamble.
With the NBA Draft approaching and trade talks expected to intensify across the league, Davis is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing names to monitor.
