Norfolk State defensive standout Quinton Goins is earning national recognition for his performance in the trenches, ranking among the top edge defenders in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) at the midway point of the 2026 college football season.
According to a midseason ranking shared by HBCU Sports, Goins owns an 88.1 Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade, ranking No. 2 among HBCU players and No. 4 among FCS edge defenders.
The recognition is backed by a productive season for the Norfolk State defender. Through seven games, Goins has recorded 16 total tackles, four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, according to available season statistics. He has also contributed quarterback hurries and passes defended. Norfolk State’s official statistics provide the season-by-season defensive breakdown.
Those numbers highlight Goins’ ability to disrupt opposing offenses, make plays behind the line of scrimmage and create pressure on quarterbacks. His four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks demonstrate his impact in the backfield, while his PFF grade adds another layer to the evaluation of his performance.
PFF grades players on a play-by-play basis, assessing their execution rather than relying exclusively on traditional box-score statistics. Goins’ 88.1 grade places him among the FCS’s top performers at his position in the reported midseason rankings.
Goins’ recognition also shines a spotlight on the talent competing at historically Black colleges and universities. As Norfolk State continues its 2026 campaign, his performance gives Spartans fans another defensive playmaker to watch.
With the second half of the season ahead, Goins has an opportunity to build on his production, continue making life difficult for opposing offenses and strengthen his standing among the FCS’s top edge defenders.
