Defense came up with some big takeaways as the Prairie View A&M Panthers outlasted the Hornets of Alabama State Saturday evening with a 24-15 victory.

How it Happened:
Alabama State’s offense struggled to find its rhythm during the game due to strong coverage from the Panthers defense.  The Panthers pass rush made its presence felt on the night, forcing ASU’s quarterback out of pocket and into several rushing and scrambling situations.

Running back Ahmad Antoine led the Panthers in rushing with 66 yards, while Jaden Stewart was second on the team with 29 total yards.  Quarterback Trazon Connley finished 25 rushing yards and two TD’s.  Connley threw for 180 going 14-19-1.

Senior free safety Tariq Mulmore led the Panther defense with 13 tackles on the evening a career-best.  Also putting together a career night was senior Shahid Reece, who recovered two fumbles, had two tackles and one quarterback hurry.

The Panthers struck first scoring from the 16 yard line leaving 8:14 left in the first quarter off of a Connley rush up the middle.  ASU had a chance to knot the game, but was only able to score six with1:57 left in the quarter, after a missed PAT.

Connley struck again from two yards out to advance the score 14-6 leaving 5:59 on the clock, before going into the half.

Alabama State came out in the third quarter scoring a 31 yard field goal to make the score 14-9 in favor of the Panthers.  Prairie View A&M added three more points to continue their lead at 17-9 again leaving just under six minutes (5:58) left in the third.

The Hornets threatened in the fourth with 10:26 left in the game adding six more points, missing the PAT – two point conversion.  PVAMU added a final score, still leaving 2:50 on the clock and a nine point lead (24-15).

The defense made some big defensive stops in the last two minutes of the game.  An 18 yard sack and a holding penalty sealed the deal as the Panthers celebrated with their second SWAC win of the season.
The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 for the State Fair Classic, when they face the Grambling State Tigers for a 6 p.m. kick off from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
