MUNCIE, Ind. — Tragedy has struck the high school football community after West Virginia football commit Chris Wilson Jr. was killed in a shooting early Monday morning.56

Wilson, 17, was a senior at Yorktown High School in Indiana and one of the top football prospects in the state. He had committed to play defensive end for the West Virginia Mountaineers in June.

According to the Muncie Police Department, officers were called to the 1400 block of East Cromer Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. Monday after a report of shots fired. Wilson was found inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into his death remains ongoing. Police have not publicly released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

A Promising Football Future Cut Short

Wilson was a highly regarded defensive end who had attracted scholarship offers from numerous major college football programs before choosing West Virginia.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound prospect committed to the Mountaineers on June 11 after receiving interest from programs including Auburn, Indiana, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa State, Cincinnati and others.

Multiple recruiting services rated Wilson as a four-star prospect.

On the field, Wilson had already established himself as one of Yorktown’s defensive leaders.

As a junior in 2025, he recorded 25 tackles, seven tackles for loss and four sacks while helping Yorktown finish 9-3 and win an Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A sectional championship.

Through five games of his senior season, Wilson had recorded 12 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and four quarterback hurries.

He was expected to finish his senior season at Yorktown before joining West Virginia’s 2027 recruiting class.

Instead, his football career and life were tragically cut short.

West Virginia Reacts

The West Virginia football program released a statement Monday mourning Wilson’s death.

The program said it was “heartbroken” by the tragic loss and extended its thoughts and prayers to Wilson’s family, friends, teammates and loved ones.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez also expressed his condolences, saying the WVU program had enjoyed getting to know Wilson during the recruiting process.

Yorktown Community Mourns

Yorktown High School principal Stacey Brewer informed students and families Monday that Wilson had died.

The school described Wilson as a valued member of the school, football team and community.

Yorktown officials also said Muncie police are leading the investigation and that Yorktown police confirmed there was no threat to students or the school.

Counselors will be available to students and staff when classes resume.

Wilson’s football coach, Mike Wilhelm, remembered him as not only a great football player but an even better friend and teammate.

Investigation Ongoing

Muncie police continue to investigate Wilson’s death and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department’s Detective Division at 765-747-4867.

For a young athlete who had already earned a Division I opportunity and was preparing for the next chapter of his life, the loss is being felt across Yorktown, West Virginia and the broader football community.

Chris Wilson Jr. was only 17.

Rest in peace, Chris.
