Ryan Clark’s ESPN exit unfolded earlier than the network originally planned.
According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, ESPN informed Clark during Monday’s episode of NFL Live that the network was parting ways with him after media inquiries began circulating about his status and executives feared the news would leak before they could tell him directly.
Clark was appearing as an analyst on the show when he was informed off-air. He did not return for the final 10 minutes of the broadcast.
Sources told The Athletic that Clark’s position had been in question since after Super Bowl LIX in February, with concerns about his future at ESPN emerging behind the scenes. Last week, The Athletic reported that Clark was likely to be let go.
ESPN’s original plan was reportedly to inform Clark on Tuesday morning, but after receiving calls regarding his departure, the network moved up the timeline. The company wanted Clark to hear the news from ESPN rather than find out through media reports online.
Clark joined ESPN in 2015 following a successful NFL career that included a Super Bowl victory with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He quickly became one of the network’s most recognizable football voices, appearing on programs including NFL Live, First Take, Get Up, SportsCenter, and Monday Night Countdown.
The move is expected to be part of a larger round of layoffs at ESPN as the network continues restructuring its talent lineup.
