This was thought of a potential matchup that would help establish the hierarchy in the Ohio Valley Conference and in a manner of speaking it was. However instead of closely contested matchup it was 60 minutes of domination that only ended when the clock mercifully ticked down to zeros as Southeast Missouri put the boots to Tennessee State keister 42-0.
The Redhawks defense limited the Tigers offense to just 256 yards of total offense ( 104 rushing, 152 yards receiving). SEMO harassed Draylen Ellis into completing just 14 of his 35 pass attempts for only 104 yards and was sacked 3 times. It was not a walk in the park for TSU running backs , with neither Devon Starling of Jalen Rouse cracking 70 yards on the day and as a team the Tigers averaged a mere 3.5 yards per rush.
SEMO got right to on their first offensive possession, after a quick-three-and out from TSU, needing just two plays, courtesy of Gino Hess to get in the end zone and making the score 7-0, which was the closest the score would be the rest of the day.
SEMO’s next score came in the second quarter, using a 17-play, 83 yard drive that ended with a 9-yard TD pass from Paxton DeLaurent to Damoriea Vick to make the score 14-0. The Redhawks would score again later in the period, capping an 8-play, 79 yard drive with a touchdown from Hess, his second of the day, to increase the lead to 21-0.
The lead would be pushed to 28-0 at the end of a 3-play, 29-yard drive that concluded with Hess’ third scoring run of the day, this one from 3-yards out.
After a Kaleb Mosley missed kicked from 46-yards out, the Redhawks took over and scored on Darrell Smith’s 56-yards touchdown run to push the rout to 35-0.
Even with the Hawks called off , SEMO was still able to put more points on the board with Kevin Robbins’ 20-yard run to finally end this torture session disguised as a football game, 42-0.
The Redhawks piled up 459 yards of total offense, including 310 yards on the ground, with Gino Hess leading the way with 136 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.
The Tigers look to breakout of this two-game skid when they host the Skyhawks of UT Martin next week. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm CST.
