FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Junior DaVaughn Kelsie‘s (Richmond, VA) offensive spark down the stretch sealed the deal as the Shaw University men’s basketball team defeated Fayetteville State University, 65-62 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest Wednesday night inside Felton J. Capel Arena.
Kelsie scored seven points in the last 7:05 including a 3-pointer with 2:51 left to give Shaw some cushion before key free-throws from junior Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) and junior Derrick Randolph (Chicago, IL) provided the Bears with a 65-59 lead. On the ensuing possession, Denzell Hosch hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to pull the Broncos within three but after a missed free throw from Randolph and missed corner 3-pointer from FSU’s Mark Burton, the Bears was able to collect a defensive rebound and hold off the Broncos for a triumph win on the road.
Shaw (14-13, 9-8 CIAA) never led by more than 10 points in the game but its relentless play throughout proved to be enough as it completed the sweep of the Broncos (6-18, 5-12 CIAA) and a first place record in the Southern Division standings with a 8-3 mark.
Kelsie paced the Bears with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 5-of-11 from 3-point line while Hinton finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Randolph would round out the double figure scoring for Shaw with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
In the game, Shaw outshot Fayetteville State 42.0-percent (21-50) to 41.1-percent (23-56). From downtown, the Bears sunk nine 3-pointers while the Broncos tallied seven. Over the course the game there was 10 ties and nine lead changes.
Fayetteville State was led by JaQuel Richmond who finished 22 points while Hosch added 11 points and Joshua Bryant chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Shaw will return to action Saturday, Feb. 23 for its regular season finale and senior day against Johnson C. Smith. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.
