SIAC announces basketballers of the week

ATLANTA, Ga. (January 17, 2023) – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has announced its men’s and women’s basketball Players of the Week.

For women, Diamond Jones (Fort Valley State) was named Player of the Week, while Nadia Thorman-McKey (Tuskegee) earned Newcomer of the Week.

For men, Malachi McCoy (Benedict) was named Player of the Week, alongside, Floyd Williams (Lane) who earned Newcomer of the Week, released by the league office on Tuesday.

Women’s Basketball

PLAYER OF THE WEEK –  Diamond Jones, Fort Valley State| Guard  |  Senior  |  Evergreen, Ala.

Senior guard D.J. Jones had an extraordinary week for the Wildcats in two games last week. Jones combined 53 points last week adding seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists against conference foes. In a loss to Edward Waters, Jones shot 5-of-16 from the field, 1-of-4 from behind the arc, and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line for 19 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Against Allen, Jones led shooting 12-of-23 from the field, 4-of-9 from behind the arc, and 6-of-8 from the three-throw line for 34 points, four rebounds, three steals, and an assist.

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK – Nadia Thorman-McKey, Tuskegee| Forward  |  Senior  |  Evanston, Ill.

Thorman-Mckey had a pair of double figure games to help the Golden Tigers go 2-0 over the past week, starting with a 17-point, 10 rebound double-double against Central State (Jan. 9), along with four steals in 34 minutes of play. The forward followed that effort with 13 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals in 25 minutes of play in the win over LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday afternoon.

Men’s Basketball

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Malachi McCoy, Benedict| Forward  |  Junior  |  Berry Islands, Bahamas

McCoy led the Tigers with 18 points and 13 rebounds in a 68-59 victory over Albany State on Saturday. In a Monday loss to Morehouse, McCoy had 13 points and 4 rebounds. McCoy made 14-of-17 field goals on the week (.824). McCoy is shooting .629 from the field on the season.

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK– Floyd Williams, Lane| Guard  |  Sophomore  |  Fayetteville, TN

Williams paced the Lane offense in a win over Spring Hill College, turning in a well-rounded performance that saw him go 7-for-11 from the field including 4-of-7 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. The sophomore guard finished with 25 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
