South Carolina State’s Joshua Barker Earns No. 1 FCS Defensive Line Grade With Elite 90.2 PFF Mark

South Carolina State Bulldogs defensive lineman Joshua Barker is putting together a season worthy of national recognition.

Barker has earned an elite 90.2 Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade, ranking No. 1 among both HBCU and FCS defensive linemen midway through the 2026 college football season.

The distinction puts the Bulldogs standout at the top of the position rankings and adds another individual accomplishment to South Carolina State’s championship aspirations.

Barker Is Making His Presence Felt in the Trenches

Barker has already demonstrated his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. During South Carolina State’s 31–21 road victory over Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 26, the senior defensive lineman delivered one of his most impressive performances of the season.

He finished with four tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries, consistently putting pressure on the Wildcats’ offense.

His performance helped South Carolina State limit Bethune-Cookman to 107 rushing yards and earned Barker MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

That showing offered a clear example of the disruptive ability reflected in his reported PFF grade.

A Key Piece of South Carolina State’s Defense

Barker entered the 2026 season with preseason All-America recognition after helping the Bulldogs capture the 2025 MEAC championship and HBCU national championship.

He was named to the BOXTOROW 2026 HBCU College Football Preseason All-America Team alongside defensive teammate Ka’Von Chisolm and linebacker Jordan Franklin.

South Carolina State has continued to build its identity around a physical, productive defense. Through seven games, the Bulldogs had allowed just 241.6 yards per game, including 90.7 rushing yards per contest, according to the program’s October 15 statistical update.

Barker’s ability to pressure quarterbacks and create negative plays makes him an important part of that defensive effort.

What the 90.2 PFF Grade Means

Pro Football Focus evaluates individual players on every graded play, assessing their performance rather than relying exclusively on traditional statistics. Grades are normalized to a 0–100 scale.

A 90.2 grade is an elite mark, underscoring the level of performance attributed to Barker through the midpoint of the season.

While tackles and sacks provide a measurable snapshot of a defender’s production, film-based grading can also account for the quality of individual execution on plays that do not necessarily appear in the box score.

The Bottom Line

Joshua Barker is giving South Carolina State another reason to believe its defense can remain among the best in HBCU football.

With an elite reported PFF grade, a dominant performance against Bethune-Cookman and preseason All-America recognition, the senior defensive lineman is building a compelling case for continued national attention.

For the Bulldogs, Barker’s impact goes beyond a ranking. His ability to disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage and pressure opposing quarterbacks could prove crucial as South Carolina State pursues another MEAC championship.
