OMAHA, NE – Juniors Lamarcus Lee and Montese Blake each had career and season-highs of 17 points that helped Southern defeat IUPUI 83-77 at Baxter Arena on Tuesday night in the final round of the Cayman Island Classic – Mainland Tournament.
Brendon Brooks had a season-high 14 points off the bench for the Jaguars (3-4) while Damiree Burns chipped in nine points and team high 13 rebounds. Darius Williams had eight points and eight rebounds along with Amel Kuljuhovic who also chipped in eight points and had two rebounds for the Jaguars.
Southern, who just wrapped up their third straight road game, has eight more road contest before returning back at home on January 11th. “I thought we played really well in stretches,” said head coach Sean Woods “We started the game with a lot of energy but we have to learn to sustain it, we have a lot of new players and we are trying to find our rhythm and still learning to play hard for 40 minutes.” ” These games will help test our toughness and help us learn a lot about ourselves, as we keep growing and learning, these games will help prepare us for Southwestern Athletic Conference play.”
Southern shot 57 percent for the game (34-for-60) and 41 percent from three-point range (7-17). The Jaguars shot 67 percent form free throw line (8-12) and outscored IUPUI bench 45-19.
