The San Antonio Spurs knew they were making a long-term investment when they selected Jayden Quaintance with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Now, that timeline may be extended even further.
According to multiple reports, Quaintance is expected to undergo another procedure on his right knee to address lingering discomfort stemming from the devastating injury he suffered in 2025, which included a torn ACL, torn meniscus, and a fracture. Medical evaluations indicate the ACL remains intact, but doctors have recommended a follow-up “clean-up” procedure to resolve ongoing issues and improve his long-term outlook.
The 6-foot-11 big man has battled setbacks throughout his recovery. After undergoing ACL surgery in March 2025, he briefly returned to action at Kentucky but appeared in just four games before persistent swelling and discomfort forced him back to the sidelines for the remainder of the season.
The injury concerns contributed to one of the biggest draft slides of the night. Once viewed as a potential top-10 selection, Quaintance ultimately fell to San Antonio at No. 20 despite being regarded as one of the most talented defensive prospects in the class.
If the recommended procedure is performed, recovery could keep him off the court for approximately six months, potentially delaying his NBA debut until late 2026. That timeline makes a full redshirt rookie season increasingly realistic as the Spurs prioritize his long-term health over rushing him back into action.
Fortunately for San Antonio, the organization can afford to be patient. With franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama anchoring the frontcourt and a roster built to contend now, the Spurs have no reason to accelerate Quaintance’s recovery. Instead, they’ll focus on ensuring the former five-star recruit can eventually reach the elite defensive ceiling that made him one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft.
For now, the priority is simple: get healthy. If Quaintance can finally put the knee issues behind him, San Antonio may have landed one of the biggest steals of the 2026 NBA Draft.
