BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern University forward Jeremy Combs has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after helping lead the Tigers to victories over Alabama State and Alabama A&M. The league made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
Combs posted weekly averages of 19 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as Texas Southern earned double-digit wins over the Hornets and Bulldogs. The Dallas, Texas native was particularly impressive against Alabama State, scoring 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting along with 11 rebounds in an 83-59 victory.
Combs is third in the league in points (14.6) and rebounds (8.1) per game and is shooting 58.1 percent from the field, a mark that is second-best in the conference.
Other Notable Performances:
– Prairie View A&M’s Devonte Patterson scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Panthers rolled to an 81-65 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday night.
– Alcorn State guard Maurice Howard caught fire for the Braves in a 76-64 victory over Southern on Saturday. The junior poured in a career-high 27 points and was 7-for-11 from three-point range. Most of the damage came in the second half where he scored 20 points and went five-for-seven from beyond-the-arc.
– Grambling State’s Axel Mpoyo averaged a double-double of 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in victories over UAPB and MVSU. He shot 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the floor, including 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from behind the three-point line. Against MVSU on Monday night, the senior forward posted a double-double, his seventh of his career, of 22 points and 11 rebounds.
