BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third consecutive week, Texas Southern University forward Jeremy Combs has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after posting standout efforts in wins over Grambling State and Jackson State. The league made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
Combs posted 26 points, 11 rebounds and a pair of steals during Texas Southern’s 86-85 victory over Grambling State, converting the game-winning layup with four seconds left in the contest. The Dallas, Texas native shot 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) from the field and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.
The graduate transfer followed that effort with a career-high 33 points to go along with 17 rebounds during a 77-65 victory over Jackson State. Combs shot 8-of-10 (80 percent) from the floor and 17-of-25 from the foul line in the game.
Combs averaged 29.5 points and 14 rebounds per game over the weekend, and during Texas Southern’s six-game win streak has averaged 22.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, notching four double-doubles during the Tigers’ hot stretch.
Other Notable Performances:
– Grambling State’s Prince Moss averaged 21.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals in games against Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M. Against Prairie View A&M, He finished with a career-high 26 points, along with a career-best nine rebounds in a loss.
– Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Shaun Doss averaged 20.5 points and six rebounds per game in wins over Southern and Alcorn State this past weekend. Doss scored 25 points in the Golden Lions’ victory over Alcorn State, a win that pushed UAPB’s current winning streak to four games.
– Mississippi Valley State’s Dante Scott averaged 23.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the Delta Devils’ wins over Alcorn State and Southern. Scott shot 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from the field and 22-of-24 (91.6 percent) from the free-throw line. Scott scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the Delta Devils’ win over Southern.
– Prairie View A&M’s Gary Blackston averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game in the Panthers’ wins over Jackson State and Grambling State. Blackston scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds versus Grambling State, as the senior was a rebound shy of a double-double (14 points, nine rebounds) against Jackson State.
