Tennessee State falls short in playoff matchup with Montana, 41-27

title image via Tennessee State Athletics Ill-timed miscues proved to be Tennessee State’s undoing as they came up short in a hard-fought 41-27 defeat to Montana in the first round of FCS Playoffs.  Montana struck first when Ty Morrison kicked a 39-yard field goal, giving the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Tennessee State responded with a James Lowery field goal, tying the game at 3 as time expired in the period. Sanders Ellis once again named Big South-OVC Freshman of the Week

For the fifth time this season, Tennessee State linebacker Sanders Ellis was named the Big South-OVC Freshman of the Week.  In TSU’s 28-21 win over no.11/12 Southeast Missouri that secured a portion of the conference crown for Tennessee State, Ellis recorded a team-high tackles ( 7 solo) and a pass breakup. Tennessee State linebacker Sanders Ellis was named Big South-OVC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season. In the Tigers’ 23-20 win over defending conference champion Gardner-Webb, Ellis recorded 5 tackles ( 3 solo, 2 assisted) and 1.5 tackles for loss  On the season, Ellis is Tennessee State’s second-leading tackler, with 64 total stops ( 22 assisted), and ranks 11th in the Big South-OVC, averaging 5.8 tackles per game. Tennessee State built a big lead early and then was able to stave off a game Western Illinois team to preserve a 45-20 win.  After winning the coin toss and choosing to receive  Tennessee State got right to work, taking the opening kickoff and marching 65 yards in 6 plays that ended when CJ Evans scampered in from 15 yards to put the Tigers up 7-0. In what turned out to be a game of runs, Tennessee State was able to pull away with a second-half flurry to dispatch Eastern Illinois 41-17.  Draylen Ellis turned in another solid outing, completing 20 of 32 passes for 224 yards 4 touchdowns, and no interception.
