Buoyed by a dominant second quarter, The Tennessee State football team kept the wining going with a 37-17 win over Eastern Illinois.
Eastern Illinois got off to an awful start, turning the ball over on their first play from scrimmage when quarterback Jonah O’Brien’s pass was intercepted by Jashun Bryant at the Panthers 41-yard line.
Tennesee State capitalized 11 plays later when Kaleb Mosley connected on a 46-yard field goal to put the Tigers up 3-0.
The next score would come early in the second quarter, again off the foot of Kaleb Mosley, this time from 42-yards, to put the Tigers up 6-0.
Later in the quarter Jashun Bryant made his presence felt again, this time forcing Kendi Young to cough up the football which was recovered and returned by Davoan Hawkins and returned to the EIU 5-yard-line. Once again Tennessee State took advantage of the opportunity when Daveon Bryant punched it in from a yard out to put the Tigers up 13-0.
After forcing a punt on Eastern’s next offensive possession, Tennessee State only needed for plays to get back in the endzone when Draylen Ellis connected with Karate Benson on a 12-yard scoring toss to put TSU up 20-0.
Another Eastern Illinois three-and-out gave the ball right back to the Tennessee State offense and a 49-yard pass from Ellis to Devon Starling, who also finished with 58 yards rushing, to give TSU a commanding 27-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Panthers got on the board for the first time in the third quarter on their initial possession of the half. Following a TSU three-and-out, Eastern only needed two plays to get in the endzone when O’Brien found Nile Hill from 29-yards to make the score 29-7. Eastern would add another touchdown later in the quarter on a 20-yard pass from O’Brein to Lazerick Eatman to daw within 13 points at 27-14. Shaky offensive play from the Tigers kllled the rhyhm and continuity that Tennessee State enjoyed in the second quarter and allowed EIU to hang around.
A 30-yard field goal from Mosley, his third of the game, pushed the Tigers’ advantage to 30-14. Drayen Ellis’ third touchdown of the afternoon, a 52-yard strike to John Roberts IV to bring the game to its final count of 37-14.
Ellis set season high-water marks in attempts ( 36), completions (27) , yards (309) and touchdowns (3). Devon Starling racked up 116 yards of total offense , 58 receiving and rushing.
The TSU defense had six sacks amongst seven Tiger defenders with Terrell Allen leading the way with 2.0. Josh Green and K’Vaughan Pope had an interception each, with pope also forcing a fumble.
