Tennessee State extended their win-streak to 4 and how have a winning record in conference play with a 85-65 win over Southeast Missouri Thursday night at the Gentry Center.
The Redhawks took an early 5-0 lead before Tennessee State got on the with a Zion Griffin three-pointer at the 18:14 mark of the half and taking the lead a minute and seven seconds later when Marcus Fitzgerald Jr knocked down a three of his own to put the Tigers up 6-5. SEMO tied the game at 6 apiece on an Aquanaut Smart free throw, but they would not seize the lead for the remainder of the half. Jr. Clay’s drive to basket put the Tigers up by two and TSU would build as much as a 15-point lead and would take a 47-35 lead into halftime.
The Redhawks were unable to make a dent in the Tennessee State advantage, only drawing as close as 11 points at 57-46 on a three from Israel Barney’s at the 11:44 mark of the half. From that point, Tennessee State outscored SEMO 28-19 and at one point built as much a 22-point advantage at 68-46 on a Clay layup with 8:30 left in the contest. The Tigers would cruise to victory, 85-65.
Jr. Clay led Tennessee State with 23 points and 8 rebounds.Christian Brown scored 13, Marcus Fitzgerald Jr added points, while David Acosta and Dedric Boyd chipped in with 10 points each.
With the win, TSU is now tied with UT Martin for third in the Ohio Valley Conference at 7-6.
Up next is another critical OVC matchup on Saturday when the Tigers host Tennessee Tech; tip-off is set for 3:30 PM CST. The Golden Eagles won their last matchup earlier in the season, 71-63.
