The Tennessee State women’s basketball team got off to an inauspicious start to Ohio Valley Conference play, suffering an 81-58 spanking at the hands of Morehead state Thursday evening in wire-to-wire fashion.

The Tigers stumbled out of the gate , only scoring 10 points and shooting 5-16 (31.25%) and finding themselves down 19-10 at the end of the period. Things did not improve in the second quarter with TSU continue to miss the mark offensively, only shooting 30% in the period, including clanking all four of their three point attempts ( the Tigers shot 1-14 from distance on the evening) , as Morehead State took a 39-26 lead into halftime.

Although the TSU would briefly draw to within ten points at 46-36 on the second of a pair of free throws by Lyric Cole with 5:24 to go in the period. From that point the Eages outscored the Tigers 20-6, to carry a 62-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Tennessee State never posed a threat for the remainder of the contest, with Morehead State stretching their advantage to as much as 25 as they ultimately cruised to an 81-58 win.

For the Eagles, Veronica Charles led three Morehead State scorers in double figures with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Isabel Gonzalez added 15 points and Crystal Corley chipped it 11 points and 7 rebounds of her own.

Kianni Westbrook and Erica Haynes-Overton were the only TSU players in double figures with 12 points apiece for the Tigers, who now fall to 5-7 and 0-1 in the OVC.

Next up for the Tigers is a New Year’s Eve matchup with Little Rock with a tip-off time set for 1:00 pm CST.
