There are just three weekends remaining in the 2018-19 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) basketball regular season, and while just one game separates the top two teams in the men’s standings, there appears to be some separation on the women’s side.

Norfolk State still sits atop the men’s basketball standings, despite suffering its first MEAC loss this past Saturday at Bethune-Cookman. The Spartans are 9-1 in league play, a game ahead of North Carolina A&T State, which boasts wins over Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore this past week.

North Carolina Central currently sits in third, and Howard and Savannah State are tied for fourth — the last spot in the standings which will have a first-round bye in the MEAC Basketball Tournament. The two teams will only meet once this season: Saturday, March 2 in Savannah, Ga.

Preseason favorite Bethune-Cookman sits in sixth place at 6-5 in conference play.

Howard took home two weekly awards from the MEAC this week; RJ Cole was named Player of the Week, while Raymond Bethea earned Rookie of the Week honors. Bethune-Cookman’s Cletrell Pope, the only player in the MEAC to average a double-double (12.9 points, a MEAC-best 12.4 rebounds per game), was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Cole is currently 12th in the nation in assists and 34th nationally in scoring.

Norfolk State returns home this weekend to face the North Carolina schools — the Spartans will take on North Carolina Central in Echols Hall on Saturday, before squaring off against North Carolina A&T State on Monday. Both games will be streamed live on FloHoops.

Howard will return to Burr Gymnasium to face those same two schools — A&T on Saturday, Central on Monday — while Savannah State will be home to take on the Florida schools. The Rattlers come to Tiger Arena on Saturday, before Bethune-Cookman makes the trip on Monday.

On the women’s side, defending champion and preseason favorite North Carolina A&T State has separated itself from the pack, sitting at 10-0 in league play after wins this past weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State. The Hawks, despite the loss to the Aggies, are still second in the standings at 10-2.

Norfolk State sits in third place at 7-3 after defeating Florida A&M to snap a three-game losing streak, while Bethune-Cookman — last season’s co-regular season champion — defeated both Norfolk State and Howard to vault into fourth place in the standings at 7-4.

B-CU is a half-game up on Howard, and those two teams split the regular-season series.

Delaware State’s NaJai Pollard, who recorded yet another 30-point game over the weekend, and Preseason Player of the Year Angel Golden of Bethune-Cookman again shared MEAC Player of the Week honors this week, while Howard saw Krislyn Marsh earn Rookie of the Week honors and Imani Bryant repeat as Defensive Player of the Week.

The Aggies will hit the road this weekend, facing Howard on Saturday and Norfolk State on Monday. Maryland Eastern Shore plays just once this week, welcoming Coppin State to the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center on Saturday. Norfolk State returns home, taking on North Carolina Central on Saturday before Monday’s tilt with the Aggies.

Bethune-Cookman will hit the road, taking on South Carolina State on Saturday and Savannah State on Monday.
