Despite another leading performance from sophomore David McCullough (Bowie, MD), the Bowie State men’s basketball team dropped a 78-61 contest to Virginia State (9-14, 6-9 CIAA) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) division tilt at the VSU Multipurpose Center Wednesday night.

The loss dips the Bulldogs (7-19, 5-10 CIAA) to sixth in the North as BSU will likely be playing on the first night of the 2022 CIAA Tournament next week.

McCullough had another productive effort for the Bulldogs, posting his third game with at least 20-points with 22 on the night and four rebounds while sophomore Khalil Williams (Annapolis, MD) chipped in 11 points and three rebounds

The Trojans scored the game’s first five points before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a free throw from McCullough 2:30 into the first half. VSU took a 14-2 run to extend its lead 20-8 over Bowie State and would sustain that the double digit lead heading into intermission with a 20-point stance (40-20) on back-to-back 3-pointers.

To start the second half, the Bulldogs outscored VSU 16-8 – cutting the deficit to 12 points after Williams hit from beyond the arc with 14:56 on the game clock but the Trojans pushed its lead back up to 18 on a 12-6 spread for a 60-42 command. Bowie State closed the gap to 14 but that would be the closest BSU would get to VSU as the Trojans would not relinquish on its lead.

Although the Bulldogs had trouble shooting the ball in the first half (6-32), BSU was able to shoot over 50-percent (12-23) in the second half, highlighted by 16-of-21 shots from the free throw line. Virginia State shot well from the field in both halves for 55-percent (28-51) for the game, including 11-of-25 from the 3-point line and hitting 11-of-12 shots from the charity stripe.

Bowie State will close out the regular season and remain on the road Saturday, Feb. 19 when the Bulldogs travel to Elizabeth City State. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
