ATLANTA, Ga. (October 18, 2021) – Michael Sims (Morehouse) was named Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Mackenly Newbill (Savannah State) earned Defensive Player of the Week, released by the league office on Monday.
Jackson Spradlin (Miles) was also tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week alongside, Louis Williams (Tuskegee) who earned Newcomer of the Week.
OFFENSIVE – Michael Sims, Morehouse
Quarterback | 6’3 | Senior | Detroit, MI
Sims led the Maroon Tigers to a blowout victory of Eastern division foe, Fort Valley State, 51-3. He finished 11-of-20 passing for 225 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 33 yards and another touchdown in the victory.
DEFENSIVE – Mackenly Newbill, Savannah State
Defensive End | 6’2 | Junior | Tallahassee, FL
Newbill again led the Savannah State defense as they held Clark Atlanta to two touchdowns en-route to a 46-14 win. Newbill registered five tackles, 3 for a loss, and 1.5 sacks.
SPECIAL TEAMS – Jackson Spradlin, Miles
Kicker | 5’9 | Junior | Dora, AL
Spradlin scored 10 points in Miles’ 34-31 win at Lane. He was 4-of-4 on extra points and 2-of-2 on field goal attempts (50, 33). The 50-yard field goal was a career long for the Alabama native.
NEWCOMER – Louis Williams, Tuskegee
Quarterback | 6’4 | Sophomore | Norcross, Ga.
Williams had nearly as many rushing yards as he did through the air, tossing six completions for 72 yards (12 yards per completion) while running for a season-high 70, including a long of 28 to average seven yards per attempt over ten totes.
