West Virginia State Volleyball gets sweep over Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – West Virginia State volleyball (16-4, 7-1 MEC) closed out the week with a road sweep of the Frostburg State Bobcats (9-12, 1-6 MEC), 3-0. State hit over .300 in the match while holding their opponent to under .150.

Jacklyn Simms led the team in kills (12), digs (15), total blocks (3), and service aces (2). Simms set a new career high in digs, and matched her career high in blocks and service aces. 

Kaitlyn Cabral picked up her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. Kiersten Eggleton had a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs. DIamond’Nique Young added 10 kills and two blocks.

Set one featured seven ties and five lead changes. With the set tied at 7-all, WVSU took seven of the next nine points with help from an ace from Cabral and one from Lauren Johnson, a pair of kills from Simms, a kill from Baby Moleni, a kill from Natalie beer and a couple of Frostburg State errors. With State at set point, Frostburg called a timeout to regroup and took four straight points to give themselves set point at 25-24. A setting error by the Bobcats gave State serve again and a kill by Beer and attack error by Frostburg State gave State the 1-0 lead in the match.

WVSU took the first four points in set two and never looked back. They went on a 10-3 run in the middle of the set. Simms fired three of the kills in the set and Valencia Wilder, Cabral, and Moleni added one each. Frostburg took the next five points but the WVSU lead was insurmountable and the Yellow Jackets cruised to a 25-17 set two victory.

State hit .467 in the set with only two attack errors on the 30 total attempts.

Frostburg State’s back was against the wall and they took the first two points, fended off two WVSU ties, but quickly relinquished the lead early in the third set for the final time in the match. State led 4-3. Frostburg State was only able to put together a chain of three points before State forced a sideout and Natalie Beer closed the match with a kill, ending set three 25-18 in favor of the black and gold. 

State will have almost a week off and return to the Walker Convocation Center for a Friday night match with Notre Dame College on Oct. 20. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
