Winston-Salem, controlling the time of possession, while also limiting Shaw to just 89 yards rushing was able to convincingly defeat Shaw 34-14.

The Rams’ offense got right to work, taking the opening kickoff and driving 95 yards in 12 plays, ending with Dailyn Lee plunging in from a yard out to put WSSU 7-0.

Shaw would get on the board in the second quarter when Christian Peters connected with Ka’Trez Bracey on a 13-yard toss. The PAT was blocked, leaving the Bears down 7-6. Winston-Salem responded on their next possession, using 10 plays to travel 68 yards, lighting up the scoreboard for the second time on the afternoon when Lee found Christian MacDonald from 16 yards out. The PAT was blocked, leaving the score 13-6 with 0:46 left in the first half and that’s where it would remain heading into halftime.

At the 7:52 mark of the third quarter, the Rams extended their advantage to 20-6 when Lee threw his second touchdown of the day, finding JayDen Grimes from 8 yards out. WSSU put together another scoring drive, this one of the 6-play, 78-yard variety, that concluded when Lee scampered in from 13 yards away, which was his 4th total touchdown of the day. The converted PAT extended the Rams’ advantage to 27-6 with 14 ticks left in the third quarter.

Trevon Hester’s career-long 70-yard scamper pushed Winston-Salem’s lead to 34-6. Shaw scored a mercy touchdown when Peters linked up with Maceo Wingate from 38 yards bringing the score to its final count, 34-14.

The WSSU offense outgained Shaw 513 to 336, ran 71 plays to that of 51 for Shaw, and possessed the ball for 36:37. Winston-Salem State was also able to run the football, piling up 269 yards on the ground, while their defense held Shaw to just 89 rushing yards. Trevon Hester ran for 181 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Rams quarterback Daylin Lee completed 22 of 32 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for 2 additional touchdowns and 24 yards on 8 attempts.

Winston-Salem State improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA. Up next for WSSU is a matchup with Livingstone, who defeated the Rams 23-21 in the most recent matchup last season.

Shaw falls to 4-3 and 2-2 within the CIAA. The Bears will have a tall order in front of them next week when they head to Charlotte, NC where the undefeated Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith await.
