The Texas Southern women’s basketball team had three players score in double figures, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 76-59 in its season opener against New Mexico inside the Pit Arena on Monday night.

Texas Southern (0-1, Overall, 0-0 SWAC) was paced by three Tigers who scored double figures including Daeja Holmes and Jordyn Turner who had 15 points, and Taniya Lawson who chipped in 12.

Holmes opened scoring for the 2023-24 season with a jumper in the paint before UNM would return the energy. The Lobos went on a 17-7 run in the first to lead 19-9, as that run was capped by a three-pointer by Nyah Wilson on the fast break. TSU’s Anela Thomas responded with a bucket from behind the arc to close off the first quarter, trailing 19-12.

The Tigers trailed by as little as a 21-14 deficit to open the second quarter as both teams exchanged buckets. Turner would be the one to hit the jumper to return the favor. Down the stretch, New Mexico led by as many as 16 points with 2:40 remaining in the second. The Lobos scored nine points in a row to lead 30-14, as that run was stopped by Taniya Lawson who drained a three with 2:26 left. TSU scored the next five points to trail by 11, as they maintain that until half, trailing 35-24.

Texas Southern outscored New Mexico 19-16 in third quarter, knocking down four 3-pointers with one coming from both Shomari Philips and Lawson and the other two from Holmes. The Tigers entered the fourth quarter trailing 51-43.

Turner opened scoring in the fourth with a pull-up jumper. The game was as close as a six-point deficit 51-45, but the Lobos went on a 9-2 run with 7:49 remaining to take a 60-47 lead.  The closes the game would get is 65-57 with 4:10 on the clock, but the Tigers couldn’t hold on as they fell 76-59.
