NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana’s Ruxandra Flueras is the Red River Athletic Conference Defender of the Week in women’s volleyball for Sept. 2-8.

The RRAC announced Monday the award, Flueras’ first this season and the sixth of her XULA career.

Flueras, a 5-foot-4 libero and a fifth-year player from Chieri, Italy, surpassed 2,000 digs in her college career during the final match Saturday of the Kansas Wesleyan Coyote Classic at Salina, Kan. Flueras had 17 digs in the Gold Nuggets’ four-set victory against Stephens to reach 2,009 in her career — 536 in two seasons with XULA and 1,473 in three seasons with Colby (Kan.) Community College.

XULA was 2-2 at the KWU tournament, and Flueras produced 51 digs, two aces and nine assists in 13 sets.

This is the Gold Nuggets’ second RRAC weekly award this season. Sydney Murray was attacker of the week for Aug. 19-25.

Next for XULA (3-9) will be its first two conference matches: 6 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday at Texas A&M-Texarkana. The matches were moved from New Orleans to Texarkana because of the approach of Tropical Storm Francine, which is expected to become a hurricane this week.
