Tennessee State head men’s basketball coach Brian “Penny” Collins has stepped down, effective immediately, to accept a coaching position with the Memphis Grizzlies.
“On behalf of Tennessee State University, I wish Coach Collins and his family the very best as they begin this exciting new chapter,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen. “We are proud to congratulate Coach Collins on this significant opportunity, which reflects the meaningful work he has done here over the past seven years.”

His impact on our student-athletes and the Tennessee State University family has been profound. His passion and unwavering commitment to developing young men and providing a first-class experience have been truly invaluable.”
Coach Collins spent the last seven seasons at the helm of the Tigers men’s basketball program, compiling an overall record of 98-118 overall record and a 58-72 mark within the confines of Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) play. This past season he guided the Tigers to a 17-16 overall record and 12-8 in the OVC. Tennessee State earned a 3-seed in the OVC Conference Tournament and advanced to the semifinals, their deepest run in the conference tournament since the 2012-13 season.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to Coach Collins for his leadership and for guiding our student-athletes with integrity and purpose,” said Interim President Dwayne Tucker. “He has played a key role in bringing our men’s basketball program back to a competitive standing in the OVC.”
Assistant coach Erik Buggs, who joined the Tigers staff after spending the three previous seasons at UT Martin, where he helped the SkyHawks win 24 games and the OVC regular season championship in the 2022-23 campaign.
