SAVANNAH, Ga. — Albany State made a statement in its Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Saturday night, dominating Savannah State from the opening kickoff before cruising to a 49-17 victory at Theodore “Ted” Wright Stadium.
The Golden Rams scored in every quarter and built a commanding 35-0 lead before Savannah State finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
The victory marked the first win of David Bowser’s tenure as Albany State’s head coach and moved the Golden Rams to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in SIAC play. Savannah State dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. (Albany Herald)
Golden Rams Control the Game
Albany State wasted little time establishing control.
Quarterback Jeffrey “JD” Davis delivered an efficient performance, completing 18 of 21 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns.
The Golden Rams finished with 435 total yards, converted 10 of 14 third-down opportunities and controlled the football for more than 35 minutes.
Albany State’s defense was just as impressive.
Savannah State managed only 19 rushing yards on 21 attempts, while the Tigers converted just 3 of 11 third downs.
First Half: Albany State Takes Control
Running back Jayden Threatts opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving Albany State a 7-0 advantage.
Threatts struck again early in the second quarter, breaking through for a 14-yard touchdown run to put the Golden Rams ahead 14-0.
Albany State carried that advantage into halftime.
Third Quarter: Golden Rams Pull Away
The Golden Rams came out of halftime looking to put the game away.
Davis connected with Cardrece Mobley for a 15-yard touchdown early in the third quarter, extending the lead to 21-0.
Albany State then put together an 11-play, 79-yard scoring drive that consumed more than seven minutes.
Davis capped the drive by finding Exavior Sherrod for a 17-yard touchdown with three seconds remaining in the quarter.
Albany State entered the fourth quarter with a 28-0 advantage.
Fourth Quarter: Albany State Finishes the Job
The Golden Rams added another touchdown almost immediately.
On Savannah State’s first snap of the fourth quarter, Cameron Watts intercepted quarterback Rashawn Truell and returned the pick for a touchdown, pushing Albany State’s lead to 35-0.
Savannah State finally got on the scoreboard when Joshua Woodley connected on a 41-yard field goal.
Albany State responded with another extended scoring drive, marching 77 yards on 12 plays before backup quarterback Vinson Berry connected with Sincere Rodriguez for an 8-yard touchdown.
Savannah State answered with a big play of its own when Truell found Trenton Rhodes for a 68-yard touchdown.
But the momentum didn’t last.
On Albany State’s next offensive snap, Kamran “Kam” Ward broke free for a 76-yard touchdown run, putting the Golden Rams ahead 49-10.
Savannah State added a late touchdown, but by then the outcome had already been decided.
