The second round Western Conference playoff series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs is tied 2-2 after the Timberwolves held off the Spurs 114-109 in a pivotal Game 4 matchup Sunday night.
Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 36 points, including 16 crucial points in the fourth quarter to help the Wolves save their season ,for the moment, by avoiding falling into a 3-1 hole.
“Today is Mother’s Day,” Edwards said, redirecting the first news conference question. “I just wanted to win for my Mom. It was that simple.”
That pernicious disease, cancer, took Edwards’ mother , Yvette Edwards, from him in 2015. The disease was not done torturing Edwards and his family, claiming his grandmother, Shirley Edwards, just eight months later.
The biggest turning point came in the second quarter when Victor Wembanyama was ejected after being assessed a Flagrant 2 for an elbow to Naz Reid. Wembanyama’s exit shifted momentum, though San Antonio still battled throughout the game behind 24 points apiece from De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper, with Stephon Castle adding 20 points of his own.
Minnesota closed the game on a late run and got key defensive stops in the final minute to secure the win before the series heads back to San Antonio for Game 5 Tuesday night.
