The Detroit Pistons could be eyeing another significant addition as they continue building around All-Star guard Cade Cunningham.
According to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Pistons are among the teams interested in Sacramento Kings guard Zach LaVine as Detroit looks to strengthen its perimeter shooting and offensive firepower.
Stein and Fischer reported that Detroit’s search for additional shooting has also led the organization to monitor players such as Coby White and Isaiah Joe. However, LaVine may be the most intriguing name of the group due to his proven scoring ability and All-Star pedigree.
The 31-year-old guard is entering the final year of his contract and faces a June 29 deadline regarding his $49 million player option. That contract situation could make him a player to watch as teams around the league evaluate trade possibilities this offseason.
Despite battling injuries in recent years, LaVine remains one of the NBA’s most dynamic offensive players when healthy. His ability to create his own shot, score from all three levels, and stretch defenses with his outside shooting could provide Detroit with another offensive weapon alongside Cunningham.
The Pistons took a major step forward this past season and appear committed to accelerating their rise in the Eastern Conference. Adding a player of LaVine’s caliber would undoubtedly signal that Detroit believes its championship window is beginning to open.
Whether the interest develops into serious trade discussions remains to be seen, but the Pistons continue to be one of the more aggressive teams to watch this offseason.
